Miniature Donkey receives Permanent Tracheostomy

An 8 year old miniature donkey was presented to Stone Ridge Equine Care due to a history of long standing labored breathing, ingesta from nostrils, and pneumonia. Upon exam, Dr. Stone diagnosed the donkey with partial paralysis of the upper airway and recommended a permanent tracheostomy to be performed. A permanent tracheostomy involves creating a permanent hole in the windpipe for the patient to breath through.  The surgery was performed without any complications. Immediately after recovery the patient was breathing without any difficulty. The patient returned for an evaluation 2 weeks after surgery and the difference was remarkable. He had gained weight, his hair coat looked much healthier, and he was breathing without any difficulty. The owner commented that he was now running around the field playing with the horses; something he had not been able to do in the past!

That is so neat of a story. Glad RH and crew could help this little guy..I had one of his first “ strange and weird “ patients back in the day in Sturgis. In fact, I had a couple of oddball cases for him. He kept digging until he figured out what was going on with both of my horses. He and Linda have been my equine health providers since the beginning, and will continue to be as long as I have a horse in my life.

Dr. Stone Is the best. No matter what you bring him he “stays calm and doctors on” to take care of the problem.

I can’t say enough about Dr. Stone & his staff. They go above & beyond & take the extra mile to take care of your horses needs. They really care about what your horse really needs.

They have been up all night with emergency colic surgery with a positive outcome. They saved a foal that was born three weeks early. I can’t even begin to tell everything we have been thru together. But I can tell you one thing, they don’t come any better than Dr. Stone & his staff. They are like family to our horses & us.”
