Foaling Emergencies *Warning: Some pictures may be graphic to viewers*

Unfortunately, complications can arise during foaling that jeopardize both the mare and foal. Factors such as the size of the foal, the size of the mare, the mare’s nutritional status, and the position of the position of the foal can all play a role in difficult birth or dystocias. If the mare was sewn up after breeding, the casslick needs to be removed before foaling. If the foal is too large or in the wrong position for the mare to deliver the baby can become lodged in the pelvic canal or severely tear the mare’s vaginal wall.

It is important to have the mare accessed by a veterinarian so that any repair work that needs to be done can be done quickly to help the healing process. If the mare is treated in a timely manner, many recover fully and can be re-bred without any issues.

The pictures below are of a mare who tore her vaginal wall and rectum. The after picture shows where the tear was sutured closed to separate the rectum from the vagina. Dr. Stone repaired the tear and the mare healed completely without any issues.

I can’t say enough about Dr. Stone & his staff. They go above & beyond & take the extra mile to take care of your horses needs. They really care about what your horse really needs.

They have been up all night with emergency colic surgery with a positive outcome. They saved a foal that was born three weeks early. I can’t even begin to tell everything we have been thru together. But I can tell you one thing, they don’t come any better than Dr. Stone & his staff. They are like family to our horses & us.”
